Below you will find frequently asked questions and answers. You may submit your own questions below the FAQ section.
What is Kiteboarding?
Kiteboarding is an action sport. A kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to be propelled across the water on a board. There are many different ways to enjoy the power of the wind in Maine, including kitesurfing (with a surfboard in the waves), snowkiting (on skis or snowboard on the snow), or on the beach using a landboard or buggy.
Can I try kiteboarding?
To begin kiteboarding, you need to take several hours of lessons. This is the first step in your progression to become a beginner kiteboarder. You should not attempt kiteboarding in Maine until you have graduated introductory lessons, and then you should use the beginner launch at Pine Point.
Is kiteboarding safe?
With safe equipment and training, kiteboarding is relatively safe. Kiteboarders are encouraged to continue learning through instruction and online resources. We have some local safety guidelines and kite beach information on this site.
Where should beginner kiteboarders practice?
We have identified one launch spot in the area for beginner kiteboarders. You should use the sand bar at Pine Point. This is a good spot to learn during low tide with south and southwest winds. Please stay on the sand bar and stop riding before you reach the beach. Keep your kite over the water when walking upwind. Please be respectful of other beach users. Stay over 650 feet away from Piping Plover nests.
How do I contact other kiteboarders?
Come talk to kiteboarders at the beach. We have a private group chat for kiteboarders. We use it to talk about where we'll be kiting next and share photos. It is invite-only for current Maine kiteboarders.
